Ph.D. Minor Degree Requirements

A Ph.D. minor in bioinformatics is offered by the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI.  Twelve (12) credit hours are required for the minor.  The core curriculum consists of graduate-level courses in informatics. If a computer science requirement has already been met (see below), an elective can be chosen in biology, chemistry, computer science, information science, or medical and molecular genetics.

Objectives for Ph.D. Students

  • Gain proficiency in the methods and applications of informatics in general and bioinformatics in particular.
  • Benefit from the interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics through related course work in biology, chemistry, computer science, library and information science, and other areas.

Curriculum for the Ph.D. Minor in Bioinformatics

Prerequisites

The graduate bioinformatics course assumes a minimal knowledge of cell and molecular biology.  That level of understanding could be gained with at least six undergraduate credit hours in molecular biology, genetics, or evolution.

Required Graduate Courses:

  • INFO I501 Introduction to Informatics (3 cr.)
  • CSCI 548 Introduction to Bioinformatics (3 cry) (P: preparation in computer science; see above)

Electives

  • INFO 590  Biological Data Management
  • INFO 590  Machine Learning in Bioinformatics

Students in relevant Ph.D. programs such as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical and Molecular Genetics, Medicine, Chemistry, or Biology.
