New Media students ink publishing deals
September 30, 2006
A trip to ComicCon 2006 in San Diego this summer has paid off nicely for two IU New Media students. James Vining and Guin Thompson pitched their creative works to publishers at the prestigious gathering, and came away with contracts to publish within the upcoming year.
Vining, a New Media graduate student, is the author and artist for "First in Space" to be published by ONI Press. "First in Space" is a graphic novel that follows the true story of Ham, the first monkey shot into space. Vining is currently in negotiations to develop this title for the "Comics in the Classroom" educational program with ONI Press.
Thompson, a New Media undergraduate student, is the co-author and artist for "Scars: Stories of a Life Well-Lived." "Scars" is a three-part series that chronicles a grandfather's life history (as told by his scars) to his granddaughter. This series will serve as the basis of her senior capstone project and will be published by Archaia Press.
Both are students of Durwin Talon, associate professor, IU School of Informatics, New Media program.
