Media arts and science professor lauds merits of latest social network

October 11, 2007

According to Richard Edwards, it's just fine for you to get your mojo on. He's referring to IndyMojo, the latest social network to join established online behemoths MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. There's something different though about IndyMojo: it encourages participants to actually step away from their computer and attend social events and activities around Indianapolis with others that they've met through the site.

"Social networking became an opportunity for individuals to find other people in the world that share their interest, relevant belief systems or ideologies," Edwards, an IU School of Informatics media arts and science professor, told The Indianapolis Recorder in a recent article published by the African-American weekly. "Social networking allows people to get together; it has stimulated ways for people to connect online."

Prof. Edwards explained to reporter Jessica Williams-Gibson that localized Web sites such as IndyMojo bring a sense of humanness to online communities. The September 28th article entitled "Online social networking gives new meaning to community" goes on to describe how social activities are identified and then vetted for safety. And, the story wisely notes that while social networking is still relatively new, current users won't always be in their 20's.

"Social networking is a hybrid activity. As the demographic ages, they'll take these lessons forward. New forms of the practice will be developed," Edwards told the newspaper.
