HIA expert to give lecture on importance of Personal Health Records
October 25, 2007
Ruth Walker, academic specialist and professional practice coordinator, IU School of Informatics Health Information Administration Program, will be lecturing on The Importance of the Personal Health Record – It’s Time to Take Charge of Your Healthcare Information, Friday, November 9, 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM, Informatics and Communications Technology Complex (ICTC), Room IT 152.
Walker’s talk is in conjunction with Health Information & Technology Week, November 4 – 10, at the ICTC where several activities are scheduled throughout the week.
Your personal health information is a valuable resource to you, your family, and the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who provide treatment and care. However, a complete record of all of personal health information often cannot be found in any single location or in a consistent format. A Personal Health Record (PHR) is important because health information can be scattered across several healthcare providers, possibly in different cities, states, or even countries and are kept in various combinations of paper-based and electronic record-keeping formats.
Keeping your own PHR allows you to provide doctors with valuable information that can help improve the quality of care you receive. A PHR can help reduce or eliminate duplicate tests and allow you to receive faster, safer treatment and care in an emergency. And, the PHR empowers the patient by providing more intimate knowledge of your health information, and allowing you to play a more active role in your preventive care and care management.
Walker coordinates the clinical affiliations of the student professional practice internships, and is advising a student who is completing a master’s thesis focusing on PHR quality. This lecture is free of charge and open to the public.
