IUPUI Media Arts & Science students help to create promotional DVD for national distribution by the American Legion
November 27, 2007
A team of IUPUI students, including two undergrads from the IU School of Informatics Media Arts & Science Program, has produced a four-minute DVD project designed to change the public face of the American Legion, as it relates to teens. The challenge – issued by the Legion, and Legion Women’s Auxiliary – was to increase awareness of events hosted by its Boys and Girls State Programs, offered to high school juniors via American Legion posts across the country.
Helping the Legion to broaden its reach were Kevin Locke, a junior MA&S student, Kyla Prows, a sophomore MA&S student, Ashley Stokes, a junior Computer Graphics Technology student, and Joey Yalowitz, a senior Communication Studies student. The team did research to determine the best ways to communicate with teens, opting for a fast-paced animated graphics style in producing the DVD.
"Serving as a student intern on the American Legion promotional video project has been a challenging and rewarding experience," says Prows. "I consider this taste of 'real-life' video production an invaluable part of my education. The experiential knowledge that this project has afforded me will be one of my greatest assets upon graduation."
The American Legion will duplicate and distribute the DVD to thousands of high schools and American Legion posts throughout the country. The video will also be available on a new Boys and Girls State Web site.
"I've enjoyed working with the production students, sharing my experiences and the fresh outlook they bring to the project," says Duane Mercier, audio-visual manager, American Legion. "I think there is a tremendous potential for local companies, and especially not-for-profits, to establish a relationship with the school to provide a meaningful practical experience to IUPUI students in many disciplines."
