Cooperative spirit between Schools of Science and Informatics pays dividend for IUPUI student
February 1, 2008
Nicole Bensel, a senior pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Informatics, knows the value of participating in activities that are geared to help students extend their education and make professional connections. Thanks to the generosity of the Purdue University School of Science at IUPUI, Nicole was able to attend the prestigious Indiana Women In Computing conference held recently in Spencer, Ind.
Disproportionally low numbers of women pursuing degrees and careers in computer science and informatics is a continuing challenge for educators. Recognizing the importance of encouraging these women, the School's Department of Computer Science generously offered to cover Nicole's conference registration costs.
"I appreciate that the School of Science sponsored me attending the conference. I really enjoyed the InWIC conference. It was a great experience, a chance to learn about new research areas, and to meet new people and network," said Bensel.
"This gesture of goodwill on the part of our colleagues in Purdue computer science is highly commendable, and underscores how collaboration of this sort benefits all concerned," said Sara A. Hook, associate dean for academic affairs and undergraduate studies, IU School of Informatics.
The conference's job fair was a great opportunity to learn about companies that might offer future employment, added Bensel, who is also pursuing academic certificates in Technical Communication from Purdue's School of Engineering and Technology, and Applied Computer Science from the School of Science.
