Mother’s Day 2008 will once again carry special significance for IUPUI graduates, including 142 newly minted grads of the IU School of Informatics. IUPUI commencement exercises will be held Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11 at 10:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. The School of Informatics will be participating in the 10:00 A.M. ceremony.
A weekend of Informatics graduation activities begins Friday, May 9 with the Graduation and Honors Dinner at Meridian Hills Country Club, 6:30 P.M. (reservations required, now closed). Several student awards will be presented, and students will hear remarks from informatics alum John Blue; Anthony Faiola, director, Media Arts and Science and associate director, Human Computer Interaction; Associate Dean Sara Hook; and Dean Bobby Schnabel.
Sunday, they’ll join more than 5,600 students at the Indiana Convention Center for commencement exercises. IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz will preside, with Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie and Purdue University President France A. Córdova conferring degrees for their respective schools. Some 4,559 students will receive degrees from IU and 963 from Purdue.
Carrying the Informatics academic banner during the IUPUI commencement processional will be Leon Nowlin, Jr., a Media Arts and Science Program senior, who was recently named the School’s 2008 IUPUI Chancellor’s Scholar Award recipient. The banner honor is traditionally extended to the graduating informatics student with the highest undergrad GPA.
Immediately following commencement will be the School’s graduation ceremony in the Wabash Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center at 12:00 P.M. Dean Schnabel will offer remarks, undergraduates will receive their diplomas, and Master’s degree candidates will participate in the traditional academic hooding ceremony.
“On behalf of our faculty and staff, I want to congratulate our graduates on their outstanding accomplishments and wish them the very best for their futures,” said Dean Schnabel. “The graduates represent an impressively wide range of informatics disciplines, and share an excellent education and outstanding prospects for exciting careers.”
