Dean Schnabel presides over IUPUI School of Informatics graduation ceremony

The IU School of Informatics at IUPUI held its commencement ceremony Sunday, May 11th at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. 142 newly minted graduates received diplomas in disciplines ranging from bioinformatics to media arts and science. Sunday's informatics ceremony was in addition to the mass gathering by more than 5,600 IUPUI students at the convention center for commencement exercises.
Accompanied by regal music performed by the Indianapolis Brass Quintet, the School of Informatics grads formed a processional into the Wabash Ballroom led by Prof. Josette Jones, who served as ceremony marshal. Dean Bobby Schnabel offered brief remarks; undergraduates were presented with their diplomas; followed by graduate students who participated in the traditional academic hooding ceremony. Diplomas were presented by Deans Anthony Faiola, Sara Hook and Mathew Palakal.
Several graduates were cited for academic achievements including:
Leon Nowlin, Jr., Chancellor's Scholar; Christopher Hardin, IUPUI Top Male Student; Nicholas Noblet, Morris Schefcik, Catherine Wiseman and Christopher Hardin, IUPUI Top 100 Students; Nicholas Noblet and Christopher Sleppy, Bepko Scholars. The Bepko award is IUPUI's most prestigious scholarship.
“On behalf of our faculty and staff, I congratulate our graduates on their outstanding accomplishments and wish them the very best for their futures,” said Dean Schnabel.
Also honored during the ceremony were Profs. Joseph DeFazio, and Ricardo Laranja, each recipients of the IU Board of Trustees Excellence in Teaching Awards.
The School conferred 142 degrees: BS Informatics – 19; BS Media Arts and Science – 54; BS Health Information Administration – 13; MS Bioinformatics – 10; MS Chemical Informatics – 6; MS Health Informatics – 10; MS Human Computer Interaction – 12; MS Media Arts and Science – 18. Since the School’s founding in 2000, 744 degrees have been earned by informatics students at IUPUI.
