IUPUI informatics researchers engaged in breast cancer research

September 17, 2008

IUPUI School of Informatics professor and researcher Jake Chen is the recipient of a Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research (BCRP) grant. A proposal entitled Dynamical Network Modeling for Identifying Systems-Level Breast Cancer Biomarkers was selected in the DOD's highly competitive evaluation process to receive the $100,000 one-year award.

Dr. Chen and the research team he leads are developing new types of breast cancer candidate biomarker proteins from a systems biology perspective, using dynamical systems modeling techniques.

"Different from conventional techniques, our approach has the potential to find globally optimal solutions, based on global network features of a complex systems, such as breast cancer molecular networks," explained Chen.

The grant's rigorous evaluation included scientific peer and programmatic reviews.

"In 2007, less than seven percent of the more than 900 submitted concept award proposals were funded," explained Chen.

Dr. Xiaogang Wu, a postdoc researcher in bioinformatics, will be supported partially through the BCRP grant. Additional information about Dr. Chen and the breast cancer research is available here.
