World Usability Day
October 10, 2008
A universal complaint among users of technology is, well, that it’s not particularly user-friendly. Finding ways to improve the user experience lies at the heart of Human Computer Interaction – a popular academic discipline offered by the Indiana University School of Informatics.
This quest for better interaction between humans and computers also lies at the heart of World Usability Day 2008, sponsored by the Indiana Chapter of the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA).
“Transportation” is the theme of this year’s event Thursday, November 13, 9:00AM-2:00PM. World Usability Day 2008 will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Boulevard (southwest corner of Michigan & University Boulevard), on the IUPUI campus in downtown Indianapolis.
Sponsored by IU Informatics at IUPUI and the Center for Information and Communication Sciences, Ball State University, the day’s events will include:
9:00 - 10:00 Registration, Posters and Other Activities
10:00 - 11:00 Welcome Preliminary Session and Activity
11:00 - 12:00 Track 1 - Driving Simulator
11:00 - 12:00 Track 2 - What is Usability and How Can It Help Me?
12:00 - 1:00 Networking Lunch and Poster Sessions
1:00 - 2:00 Keynote Session for All
UPA encourages design principles that aid in the creating, enhancing, and servicing usable products and services. Last year's World Usability Day included more than 100 events in more than 35 countries.
A poster exhibit is planned to support exchange of information about current usability-related research and development. The event is open to everyone with an interest in usability – and anyone attending the event is welcome to display posters in the exhibit.
Although the focus of World Usability Day 2008 is Transportation, posters related to any area of usability will be accepted. Send your poster content in PDF format, your contact information to kirstensmith@bsu.edu.
Participation costs are: $20 for professionals; $10 for students. Lunch is provided for those who are registered by November 4th. Online registration is open at http://bsu.edu/forms/cics/wud2008/.
