Google Wonder Wheel and Career Search – Partnering Resources

Today I stumbled across an article from Inc.com about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the secrets to effectively select SEO keywords.  Now the big question is – what does this have to do with my job search in informatics or related areas?  In our office we often get asked what salaries are from our students and alumni – so here’s the connection and a major secret unveiled.

Google has a new tool called Wonder Wheel and it can be used to help you with job searching and finding salary information. I googled “Salary Calculator” just to see what the search would find. After results were produced, I clicked on “More Search Tools” and then “Wonder Wheel.” This produced two things: a diagram and a typical Google search result list.

But here’s the really cool part: Each time I clicked on a link off the diagram, the partnering list changed. This gave me the capability to search on key terms and then to narrow down what I was really looking for as I clicked further into each bubble of the diagram. Plus with each click, the Google list provided an even more targeted list of resources to help me in my search.

Imagine what more you can do when looking for jobs with Google Wonder Wheel, in addition to more traditional job search boards and engines. Try putting in a job title and a zip code.

To access my office, try searching “Informatics 46202.” When you click on the top search link, then click on “Careers” to access our web page and to see additional blog posts.

Developing an Academic Career Plan

Gaining work experience while going to college is highly recommended, especially if you want to walk at graduation with a job offer already in hand. At the School of Informatics, we recommend developing an academic career plan through these basic steps:

  • Freshmen - Adjust to being in college and begin developing the soft skills that employers look for, including work ethic, kindness, patience, respect and empathy. Pursue part-time work that will help prepare you for internships and full-time job offers. Part-time jobs that teach soft skills include the service and retail industries.
  • Sophomores - Conduct career research to verify you have chosen the right academic field for the career you seek, and begin exploring internship possibilities.
  • Juniors – Seek out internship opportunities, beginning one-two semesters ahead of time to help secure the position you want.
  • Seniors – Continue interning and begin applying to full-time positions six months prior to graduation for best results.
