The Mission
On June 5, twelve students embarked on a four-week mission to Paros, Greece. Their objective? To document the Greek island’s cultural heritage using digital media. Their work will include multiple short videos, photography and the creation of a virtual tour to be used by the island to promote tourism, culture and sustainability efforts.
In addition to their digital media efforts, students will meet daily to discuss assigned readings on Greek culture and history, project management and work-in-progress. And they get to enjoy afternoon or evening field trips approximately four times a week. Field trip destinations include museums, churches, archaeological sites, contemporary art galleries and cultural events.
Students walk away from this experience with an improved understanding and appreciation of:
• Expectations for new media and informatics professionals
• International and inter-cultural communication
• Working in team environments
• Utilizing personal skill sets to help underserved communities
This unique international service-learning course is offered by the School of Informatics as part of IUPUI’s RISE Initiative.
