Is LinkedIn for Older Professionals? Younger? Or Both?
In today’s economy things are looking up, but some students struggle in finding positions. An article on the Fox Business website talks about LinkedIn as a “professional social network” site. Younger people are into social networking but have not engaged all social network sites equally. One example is LinkedIn. The average LinkedIn user, according to the article, is a professional in their mid-40s, but the writer confirms through the global spokesperson for LinkedIn, Lindsey Pollak, that LinkedIn has a lot to offer to aspiring young professionals. For young professionals, Pollak recommends using LinkedIn to: Manage your professional brand; Organize professional relationships; Gather and display recommendations; Become an expert; and to attract recruiters since recruiters use LinkedIn.
The Informatics Career Services Office helps students with “keyword” loading resumes and can provide guidance with developing a professional online presence. So if you are ready to create a digital footprint, our team will welcome students and alumni to visit us and ask for assistance.

6 Hot IT Jobs for 2012… (drum roll please)
Before leaving for winter break the career services staff noticed an increase in demand for IT students and alums from our employer base. After reading an article in CIO, shared by a faculty member, Davide Bolchini, the office thought we’d share the news with the rest of the world.
The job market in the US for these IT positions is expected to rise:
- Mobile Application Developers
- Software Developers
- User Experience Designers
- IT Security Professionals
- Data Warehouse Architects, Analysts, and Developers
- Infrastructure Professionals
The Informatics Career Services Office has had an increase in requests for candidates for several of these areas, especially for Mobile App Development candidates. If you are a current student who’s taking some of our mobile app classes then congratulations! You have a future career and job stability to look forward too!
Hiring is UP for Tech Workers!
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, hiring is up for Tech Workers. Last month the tech industry added 7,100 jobs, which was a .17% increase from the previous month. ComputerWorld confirms that Tech industry employment is nearing an all-time high and may surpass the record set back in June 2008 with 4.088 million tech workers. Lawn Party! September 14th
It’s happening again! Continuing the tradition begun last year, the School of Informatics and Informatics Student Government (ISG) will be sponsoring a Lawn Party for all School of Informatics current and prospective students.
Come join the fun as we offer free food, t-shirts, games, contest, a bounce house and other activities. You’ll also have access to the various School of Informatics student groups to learn more about what they’re all about and ways you can get involved.

Women in IT dinner with Microsoft’s Mary Czerwinksi
More than twenty female students from the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI and the IU School of Informatics and Computing in Bloomington were the fortunate invited guests of Microsoft’s Dr. Mary Czerwinksi at a networking dinner held on Friday, April 15. Dr. Czerwinski is a research area manager at Microsoft and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the School of Informatics. League of Excellence inducts 32 new members
The League of Excellence, a School of Informatics organization whose purpose is to honor and futher develop high-achieving students, welcomed 32 junior and senior inductees at a celebratory awards ceremony and reception on Sunday, April 10. Congratulations to all the new members!
The League of Excellence provides its members with valuable leadership opportunities, forums for the exchange of ideas, networking opportunities, unique graduation regalia and distinctive recognition on their transcript, among other benefits. The organization inducts members once each year and offers membership to students who both demonstrate outstanding character and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Mark Your Calendars for Advisor Appreciation Week at IUPUI
Have a dedicated advisor you’d like to thank for their guidance and support. Take advantage of Advisor Appreciation Week at IUPUI (March 7-11) to show your gratitude.
There will be a table in the IT lobby on Wednesday, March 9, from 11am – 1pm with free thank-you cards available for students to complete to “thank” their advisor. It’s that simple.
Also, please be aware that the School of Informatics’ dynamic duo of undergraduate advisors, Sheila Morris-Watson and Gloria Quiroz, have both been nominated as IUPUI’s Outstanding Advisor of the Year. Congratulations to both!
FAFSA Deadline Approaching for Returning Students
Attention returning students: Don’t forget to file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the March 10, 2011 priority deadline.
Your FAFSA is critically important to your financial aid package. The IUPUI Office of Student Financial Services will provide free, walk-in consulting in the lobby of their Campus Center offices on the following dates from 4:00-5:30 p.m.: Tuesday, March 1; Thursday, March 3; and Monday-Thursday, March 7-10.
The FAFSA website is www.fafsa.gov. Be sure to use this website to file your FAFAS, as other sites charge students to file. IUPUI’s school code for FAFSA purposes is 001813.
2011-2012 Scholarships Now Accepting Applications
Scholarships available only to School of Informatics’ undergraduates for the 2011-2012 academic year are now posted online! Make sure to review them all on our scholarships page.
Completed applications must be returned by March 30. Don’t miss this chance to apply and earn financial assistance towards your education!
