Wind Powered Beasts at the Beach
April 12, 2007
Host: Susan Tennant
AbstractFor the last 10 years, Theo Jansen has been occupied with creating a new kind of nature: not pollen or seeds but plastic tubes are used as its basic material. He makes skeletons that are able to walk by wind power. Eventually he wants to put herds of these animals out on beaches, so they will live their own lives.
BiographyTheo Jansen, scientist-turned-artist and kinetic (motion) sculptor, lives and works in Holland building large, multi-legged, animal-like structures designed to walk the Dutch coastline, feeding on gusts of wind. His animated works are a fusion of art, technology and science.
