The Role of Human-Computer Interaction in Health Informatics: Why the User Experience Matters

October 24, 2008

Abstract

This seminar examines the intersection of the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) and health informatics (HI). It describes the institutional transformations that must occur vis-a-vis culture, organization, infrastructure, community involvement, and resourcing to enable interactive systems in health care delivery to fully embody the attributes of user centered design. Finally, it introduces research endeavors that are focused on this intersection and the ways in which the University of Minnesota, with its partners, is advancing scientific discovery in interdisciplinary informatics.

Biography

Julie A. Jacko is the Director of the Institute for Health Informatics, University of Minnesota. She is also a Professor in the School of Nursing and in the School of Public Health. She is the author or co-author of over 120 research publications including journal articles, books, book chapters and conference proceedings. Dr. Jacko's research accomplishments span human-computer interaction, health informatics, technological aspects of health care delivery, and universal access to electronic information technologies.
