How to Apply

Please pay careful attention to the steps in this document. Applications will not be processed until all required materials have been received. Your application is considered complete and reviewed only when you have completed the required procedures, and submitted all necessary materials via the web or postal mail.

All candidates must pay an application fee. The fee can be paid online or by check or money order. We can't process your application until the correct fee is paid.

Application Procedures for All Students

  1. Complete and submit the IUPUI Graduate Online Application.

    All candidates must use the online form. Paper applications are not accepted.

    Along with the online application, please submit a resume listing your education, work, research, awards and computer programming experience. This may be attached to your online application or sent separately.

    Applicants to the Informatics Doctoral Program should choose "PhD Informatics" and "Informatics" as Academic Interest. On the Personal Statement, note if you are applying for the specialization area in Bioinformatics, Health Informatics, or Human-Computer Interaction.

  2. Write and submit a personal statement explaining: a. why you're applying to the program and b: your post-graduation career plans.

    This can also be completed via Step 1's online application.

  3. Submit all official transcripts from previous colleges and universities.

    Requirement: Bachelor's degree (with demonstrated technical skills) from accredited college or university. Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 point scale).

    NOTE: We do not require transcripts from Indiana University campuses.

  4. Three letters of recommendation from academic instructors and/or employers are required to support the application of admission. At least two of the letters should be from faculty with full-time academic standing from the institute of your most recent degree.

    NOTE: References may be submitted via this document, or through the online application in Step 1.

  5. Complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and ensure that IUPUI receives your score report from the GRE exam board (when applying for financial support).
    1. Master of Science applicants do not need to submit a GRE score unless they wish to be considered for financial assistance from the School.
    2. All Doctoral Program applicants MUST submit a valid GRE score whether or not they are seeking financial assistance from the School. The GRE score is only valid for five years.
  6. The Informatics school code for the GRE is 1325. Applicants should enter the code on their answer sheets at the examination.
  7. Pay $50 application fee

    This can also be completed via Step 1's online application.

Application Procedures for International Students and Non-native English Speakers

Requests for international applications should be directed to the IUPUI Office of International Affairs.

  1. International and non-English natives must complete Steps 1-5 in the "All Students" section.
  2. Submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score if your native language is not English.

    Please use the IUPUI School Code 1325 to ensure correct routing of your TOEFL exam to the International Affairs Office.

    NOTE: We require a minimum score of 250 for the computer-based test, 600 for the paper test, and 79 for the internet-based test. We only accept scores less than two years old.

  3. Pay $60 (US) application fee

    This can also be completed via the online application in Step 1 of the "All Students" section.
