Summer Workshops
Each summer, the School of Informatics offers high school students a unique selection of week-long workshops – fun, interactive learning experiences designed as an introduction to the exciting field of informatics.
Workshops are led by faculty of the School of Informatics’ Media Arts and Science program. Rates include use of industry-leading computer technology, production equipment and software programs.
Who May Attend
Students entering, currently in or graduating from grades 9-12. No previous experience necessary!

Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Drop-off/Pick-up is between 8-8:30 a.m. and 4-4:30 p.m.; Parking is available for an additional fee.

Web Design for Beginning Webmasters
June 4-8 and 25-29 (this is the same course offered both weeks)
Are you bored with simply browsing the Internet and want to be a part of creating it’s content? Ever wondered what it takes to create your favorite web sites? In this workshop you will learn how to make your own web site where you can share your stories, thoughts and interests with the world. Learn the basics of web design, including HTML and CSS and how they work together in creating a website. By the end of the week, you will have your very own website to share with your friends!

June 11-15
Using Flash to Create a Video Game: Have a passion for gaming, drawing, creating characters and programming? Take your first step on a path to professional game design and creation. Learn the software behind Flash games as you create and program an original game.
Game On! #2
June 18-22
Exploring the Art of Video Game Design: Dive deep into 3D game design using the Unreal Tournament 3 Game Engine – the game engine pros use to make blockbusters like BioShock and Gears of War. You’ll build skills to create, play and share your own original levels!
Attack of the Giant Photoshop!
July 16-20
Start each day with a discussion of how to “see” the world around you in new ways. Then take structured photo safaris (mini field trips around campus) to capture images to use during the lab portion of the day. Then test images in the Virtual Reality Theater (VRT). The final day will include exhibition in the VRT of participants’ work. Includes basic instruction in Photoshop and Illustrator techniques and how to create and export basic movies in Photoshop. Students should bring a digital camera or phone capable of taking photos, however photos can be supplied to students without access to a camera.
Video Bootcamp
July 23-27
Getting started as a Professional: In this workshop, students will create a short abstract video and, in the process, learn about various aspects of Final Cut as they explore its ability to layer a video and animate those layers.
