Health information professionals work with clinical, financial and administrative staff in health care to interpret data for patient care, statistical reporting and planning and medical research. They are experts in coding and classification systems, managing patient health information, and administrating computer information systems.
Program graduates are employed as directors, managers, consultants, data quality managers and privacy officers – to name just a few. Potential employers include: hospitals, physician offices and clinics, long-term facilities, insurance companies, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, software development companies and home care providers.
Two alums provide an HIA overview: a recent graduate's experiences in the program; and a healthcare veteran responsible for electronic health records at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana.
