How the Program Works

Getting Started

To pursue a degree in Health Information Administration, you must first apply and be accepted to IUPUI.

You’ll then want to meet with an undergraduate advisor to review your plan of study. You’ll begin as a “Pre-Health Information Administration” student. Throughout your first two years, you’ll complete pre-professional courses in areas such as information technology, biomedical science, business, communication, data analysis and ethics.

The Professional Program

By January 30 of your second year, you’ll apply for admission to the HIA professional program. Admission is competitive and based on pre-professional course completion, cumulative GPA (minimum of 2.50) and an interview. Completion of all required pre-professional courses does not guarantee admission.

Once accepted, you’ll complete the professional program during your third and fourth years. Our first-class faculty uses a mix of lectures and labs for instruction, and courses (except for the professional practicum) may be completed via distance education.

The Professional Practicum Experience

Our program offers one-of-a-kind experiential learning that gives you a distinct advantage as you begin your career. In your final year, you will be placed in a mentored professional practicum within a healthcare facility. You’ll report to your facility for eight hours every other Friday, gaining applied experience and valuable networking opportunities under the guidance of a Health Information Administration professional – often an alum of this very program. This experience will be integrated with classroom instruction and faculty-led discussion with fellow students assigned to other facilities.

Some students have managed to turn their professional practicum experience into job offers!
