Education
Bailey grew up and attended high school in Bluefield, Virginia. He attended Davidson College, the University of Virginia and graduated with three degrees from Oberlin College in 1976, a B.A. in music, a B.Mus. in organ performance, and an M.M.T. in music. He holds an Ed.D. in Music Education from the University of Illinois, conferred in 1989. He became a faculty member at IU in 1982. Prior to that he held positions on the Oberlin faculty, and at Chatham Hall in Virginia.
Biography
In 1988, he was appointed director of the IU School of Music at IUPUI, and has overseen the growth of the program from 400 to over 3000 students annually. As university organist, he has performed and conducted for all convocations and building dedication ceremonial events during IUPUI's and IU Medical Center's recent expansion. He has served on numerous university committees, contributed to faculty development initiatives in IUPUI technology implementation, and was a beta test developer for the campus multimedia instructional portable system, later adapting it for music media delivery.
Bailey brings to Informatics valuable experience from his role in founding the New Media program, where he oversaw the process of approval for three degree programs and a certificate program in Media Arts and Science. He also managed the approval and implementation of the School of Music's Master of Science degree in music technology and undergraduate minor at IUPUI. As director of the Indiana University School of Music at IUPUI, he initiated, designed and implemented the state-of-the-art computer music facility.
Bailey has three sons, Adam, Marshall and Phillip. For the past 15 years, Bailey has been organist and director of music at Fairview United Methodist Church in Bloomington.
Research Interests
Bailey's research is on the effect of computer-based music instruction on college student learning. In addition to co-authoring a chapter on teaching tools for music in the Electronic Classroom, he was featured on an international PBS satellite teleconference broadcast on multimedia authoring tools. Dr. Bailey has been a featured speaker and clinician at national and international conferences on computers and music. Over the past ten years, he has presented at over 60 conferences, workshops, and seminars throughout the US and abroad. From 1991-1997 he chaired the International Computer Music Technology Conference and Workshop held in Indianapolis. Two years were hosted with the College Music Society.
As an early adopter of technology in teaching, he appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX broadcasts, and has been an advocate of technology-enhanced teaching and learning since 1988. His multimedia software of the Beethoven Symphony No. 5 has been published by Electronic Courseware Systems. He is currently completing a protocol for online learning and CD media anthology of 74 classical and popular music works to accompany Charles Hoffer's "Music Listening Today," published by Wadsworth Publishing Co., and International Thomson, Inc.
From 1997-98, he completed field beta testing of the innovative Yamaha "Miburi" electronic body suit with a team of graduate students, corporate developers, music composers, performers, and dancers. In 1997 and 1998 he also chaired the Heartland Film Festival "Issues of the Creative Process" held in Indianapolis. Bailey actively performs as a choral conductor, organist, and pianist.
