Biography
Silpa Wairatpanij was born in Bangkok, Thailand and is now a resident of the United States. He is an electrical engineer with a bachelor's degree from Kasetsart University, Bangkok, and a master's degree from Purdue University.
Research Interests
Silpa Wairatpanij is currently working on the “Automation Laboratory Online” project.
The most challenge teaching method for an online course is how to let online students perform lab exercises without physically presenting in the lab but get the same experience and knowledge as same as regular students in the classroom. From spring 2007, Laboratory Informatics graduate program offers online courses. One of them is Informatics 510 Data Acquisition and Laboratory Automation. Topics in this course relate to the principle of acquiring and storing data in a computer, lab automation equipments, bar coding, and laboratory robotics. To let students get hands-on experience, many lab exercises need to be conducted. These exercises, however, requires interaction between students and the equipments in the lab.
The goal of this project is to create virtual instruments for equipments that require non-physical entity, such as, voltage or frequency signal. Online user interface will be used for the equipments that need hardware to acquire physical entity, such as, temperature, light intensity, color, or physical contact. Client-Server paradigm will be used with the laboratory robot equipped with several cameras around it. For bar coding, the same robot will be utilized to hold a bar code reader, reading different kinds of bar code examples.
