Facilities & Technology

The School of Informatics supports six dedicated computer classrooms that support a wide array of software packages for student use. The School also maintains a green screen space and an audio editing studio.

In addition the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex is also host to the following:

Large Auditorium

The 200-seat auditorium features a stage for performances and lectures, a wireless control panel to control projections from anywhere in the room, 3-D stereoscopic projection technology, theater-quality 7.1 surround sound, and adjustable drapes that modify the room’s acoustics.  This is the only facility of its kind within Indiana University.  Two screens (including a specialized silver screen for passive 3-D use) and five digital projectors serve the display technology needs of the room.  Full digital recording and mixing capability augment the resources of the room.  The auditorium can also accommodate simultaneous broadcasting at additional sites through the high performance network capabilities of I-Light—the statewide fiber optic network for higher education.

Pervasive Technology Institute Labs

Pervasive Technology Institute Labs at IU serve as an economic development catalyst for Indiana’s information technology sector through technology transfer, commercialization of innovations produced in the Labs, and joint research and development partnerships with government and industry.

UITS Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL)

The staff provides expert consulting, support opportunities, and technology for scientific visualization, virtual reality, high-end computer graphics, and visual telecollaboration.  Resources include high-end graphic workstations and clusters, very-high-resolution displays, telecollaboration systems, and projection-based virtual reality devices.

Virtual Reality Theater

A virtual reality theater completes the fourth floor’s showcase and research facilities.  Through a collaboration between the School of Informatics and UITS, the theater is used for research and teaching initiatives.

Global Research Network Operations Center (Global NOC)

The Global NOC offers support, IT-security, management, and engineering for several national and international high-speed networks that facilitate the rapid transfer of information between researchers.  At 10 gigabits per second, these networks can move the equivalent of more than 9.6 billion pages of text from New York to Seattle in an hour.  Among the key networks the Global NOC manages are the Internet2 Abilene Network, National LambdaRail, and TransPAC.  These serve hundreds of universities and research institutions nationwide.  Global NOC also manages I-Light, the state’s optical fiber network for higher education. The Center is operational 24/7, 365 days a year.

UITS Adaptive Technology Center

The Adaptive Technology Center serves IUPUI students, staff, and faculty who have disabilities.  The facility specializes in tools that assist with reading, writing, studying, and information access. Screen magnification and access software, reading assistance programs, a variety of ergonomic devices, scanners and other materials are available to assist individuals with visual impairment, muscular and mobility impairment, hearing loss, and learning disabilities.

UITS Support Center

The Support Center is the central walk-in location for accessing help with UITS services at IUPUI.  Support is also available anytime via the Web, telephone, email, and IU’s Knowledge Base, an award-winning, searchable database on information technology services for the university.  More than 10 million searches are conducted annually on IU’s Knowledge Base.

UITS Student Technology Center

The 24-hour lab offers 81 workstations that include 48 Windows workstations; four multimedia computers with digital recording, editing, authoring, and scanning capabilities; 12 collaborative workstations; and 10 laptops. The entire lab includes study and break areas.  Students use their Jagtag to print and gain access to the building after hours.
