IU started the first School of Informatics in the country and the School is now looked to by others as the example. The School continues to be on the forefront of information technology, which is pervasive in our current culture. The Bioinformatics market is “explosive” as reported in science and economic publications. Health Informatics is viewed by many, including the federal government, as a path to solving health care problems.

- At the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus Informatics enrollment is the highest of all the schools at IUPUI.
- In August 2008, Computerworld magazine announced that the IU School of Informatics was among the Top 10 of the "Top IT Schools to Watch.
