How to Apply: Health Information Administration Professional Program
Current college students on track to complete the prerequisites for entering the Health Information Administration professional program should review and submit their application packet by January 31st for admission the following fall semester. The HIA professional program is completed during a student’s junior and senior years of study.
The following items must be included with each application packet submitted:
- HIA Application
- Observation Form
- Resume
Application packets must be submitted via email by January 31 and include all of the above required items. Please send your complete application packet in ONE email to Linda Burzlaff at lburzlaf [at] iupui [dot] edu.
A two hour Health Information Management observation is required. Some possible sites include; hospitals, behavioral health facilities, rehabilitation centers, or long term care sites. Contact the site and ask for the HIM department to discuss your interest in observing. You may use a current employer if you already work in the field. The site you observe is your choice and does NOT have to be approved by the HIA department.
Admissions Requirements and Standards
- Completion of all required prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher (C- grades are not acceptable) by the end of the summer before the professional program begins in fall.
- A minimum IU cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the application deadline. You may complete the “Petition for Exceptional Consideration” found on the HIA application, if you do not meet this requirement but still feel equipped to succeed in the HIA program. Students who seek exceptional consideration may be asked to schedule an interview as part of the admission process. You will be contacted if this is necessary.
- Submission of a complete application packet (specified above) by the due date.

Note for transfer students: Transfer students who have completed HIA professional program prerequisites through another institution must first apply and be admitted to IUPUI before being considered for admission in the professional program.
